St Lucia par CaribNet
Like many of the islands in the Kweyol Caribbean, St Lucia celebrated Creole Heritage Month in October. Activities included pageants for schools and adults, music concerts and Jounen Kweyol in which communities of Anse la Raye, Dennery and Monchy were the centre of activities on Creole day with food and traditional activities.
St Lucia has a rich culture which is dominated by festivals which celebrate the contribution of the French, British and Africans who were the predominant inhabitants and give artists opportunities to work.
Â
These festivals are disperse through out the year and have elements of all art forms, they include La Woz and La Maguerite which are St Lucia’s flower festivals; Nobel Laureate week; Festival of Light / Festival of Carols which are Christmas based festivals; and of course the popular July carnival and St Lucia Jazz and Arts festival in may (former Jazz festival)
There is a new performance company on the scene, Evolution Entertainment. They just completed the second run of their highly popular play, ‘Manje Cochon’ written by the artistic director Kiedel Sonny. Evolution Entertainment produces only original and new pieces and its aim is to entertain and educate through different mediums. The Company also has a popular youtube series programme called ‘Radio Out and Bad’ which focuses on social satire.
The St Lucia chapter of KAMACUKA has been developed into a unit comprising of members of YouthSPAC – Youth Studying Performance and Theatre and writer Vladimir Lucien. Mr Lucien will be responsible for articles from St Lucia which will be published in the newsletter and YouthSPAC will continue to handle the registration of members and the administrative functions.
