Charles Chulem Rousseau
During his two years of study at MJM in Rennes where he assisted photographer Thierry PASQUIER for one year; then as an intern at the VU agency, he made a determinant encounter with Antoine D’AGATA. He would work for 7 years in a photo laboratory in film and then digital processes.
He won an award from the Profoto assistants competition in 2002, and covered the alter-globalist protest against the G8 in Genoa which earned him publication in numerous Italian newspapers (L’Expresso, Il Seculo XIX, IL Manifesto, etc.). He was also published by Libération, Jazzman and Hervas publications.
In 2005, he moved to Guadeloupe where, after his first year, he exhibited a travel notebook at the Pointe-à -Pitre media library. Then, as part of an artists’ collective, he exhibited a series entitled “Singularité” on advertising panels where he transposed the advertising message with more realistic images closer to us.
In collaboration with photographer Agnes Dahan he published various portraits of young Guadeloupeans in the international magazines Clam and Trace. In 2009, he produced a series of black and white portraits on the deaf and hearing impaired in Guadeloupe that would become a landmark in the island’s cultural life.
He continues to innovate with the establishment of the “Ecriture de Lumière” program initiated by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication to popularise contemporary photography in the scholastic environment by initiating middle school students from the towns of Vieux-Habitants, Le Moule and Sainte-Rose.
His approach to photography for the “Mi-Mas” exhibit marks a turning point in contemporary photography in Guadeloupe.
