Founded in 1968, the Barbados Community College came to be as a result of an Act of Parliament aimed at making post secondary education more accessible to the Barbadian public.
In 1990, the Act of Parliament was amended to allow for the following designations to be conferred upon students after the completion of the relevant program: Bacherlor's degrees, Associate's degrees, Diplomas and Certificates. Prior to this act, these degrees were available only at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus.
